The average salary for a 1st year Associate here is 30k max. We have close to 20% unemployment. I do not expect any professional organization to save me from this reality, I do not expect my university to get me a job. What I do expect is that none of these entities tell me how to live. So, according to my world view debt is low on the priority list and credit scores are akin to toilet paper . So I owe Stafford? If I dont get a job Stafford wont get paid. Simple.

For instance, PR Law Degrees have the added drawback that as a "territroy" of the US we have less rights than normal US Citizens but are obliged to abide by the same laws. In other words, we are constrained by Federal Law yet have no say whatsoever in how it is written. We live with this truth but many of us see through it and try to look at things on the bright side.

In PR the situation is quite scary, but on that same token I would have to say that there is intrinsic worth in attaining a degree. Okay, really if you're in a Puerto Rican Law School your debt will never amount to 150k that's first and second the job market in PR is mimicking the same thing that's happening in the States. I know a LOT of people who just graduated, passed the Bar and are still unemployed.

It's sad for you guys then,here in Canada,it costs like 10-20k to the entire degree and you're assured to find a good job straight out... Also,i'm doing sometime in the reserves and they will pay like 60% of my studies ...i can leave when ever i want...1 more year and i'll get that financial help,even though i can pay the 10-20k...lol It's the same system in the U.S. as well,some time in the army will get you enough money to start fresh.

There's more problems with LS than the debt; job prospects are still limited even out of good schools and if you realize you made a mistake, getting out of the law industry is made quite difficult with a J.D. on the resume. I agree that earning the money to go to school beforehand is a good idea. It, however, will take a while to earn the $150k necessary to fund LS. By the time you do, you could be old enough to face discrimination in hiring. Plus, you hopefully will have found a better field.

No, he's turning down this "invitation" because 150k is a lot to gamble when plenty of people with good credentials and from good schools have little to show for three years of law school but their debts. Yes I know that is true, but... If ever I come to point where I have to choose between paying back my loans or eating, paying back Stafford Loans goes last on my list. In Puerto Rico they can't put you in jail because of debt. A reasonable judge can help a down and out student by allowing deferrment. Or if push comes to shove then they can disbar the bankrupt soul, but if you don't have an equitable job as a lawyer, anyway, who will then care. Money woes come and go, but never knowledge...

You should have also mentioned that even if he is able to work himself into the top 5 % and get a big law job that he'll work like a slave trying to get his 1900+ billable hours, working until 7 pm daily, often on weekends, eating dinner in the office, gaining a lot of weight, until he wears himself out in about 2 years and leaves like the vast majority of big law lawyers.

I wonder what will happen when JDs begin to involuntarily default on their massive student loans in record numbers. If you have $150,000 in student loan debt but cannot find a job, you will probably end up defaulting on your loan even if you do not want to. Sadly, that might also result in disbarment and the complete loss of the value of people's college educations since it could prevent them from obtaining a law license in other states. It's Kafkaesque.

This is what makes it more depressing for law school grads. People everywhere seem to think we all want big firm jobs with big salaries. I have no desire to work in a big firm; it doesn't matter. I would gladly take a job that pays $20K at this point. You are just contributing to the misconception there are plenty of law jobs out there--we "spoiled rich kids" just don't want them. My father drives a school bus and my mother is a homemaker. So no, I am not a "spoiled rich kid." And I have no job.

Um, I went to law school in Manhattan (and did average) and work at a small firm *in Manattan,* and I don't make nearly $80K. Since I'm neither spoiled nor rich and I support myself, in my first year of practice I had to couch surf because I couldn't afford the apartment I had lived in working part time and living off student loans. I have friends who did very well in school who, like myself, have to earn outside income to make ends meet because we're all in about $180K of debt. #realitycheck

Yes, I made this video because I'm "only" going to make 80k a year. Tell you what, if you find a small firm job anywhere that pays anything near that for an entry level position, post it here. If you do, I'm sure that firm's fax will literally melt due to the volume of responses. Sorry, my friend, small firm jobs are going for around $35k these days. You're luck if you can get $50k. just another one of the chapters from the DVD called "All About Law School". I personally enjoyed most of the chapters in this DVD. A few were a bit more entertaining (comedic) than informational . . .but that was usually a welcome change in pace. I give it 'two thumbs up.'

I like how they say Socrates took a dialectic method 'already' in use by Aristotle... ...LOL. Aristotle was Plato's student, who himself was a student of Socrates. Socrates was a pioneer because he applied logic to questions that weren't thought to be the province of philosophers. Then again, most of the people interviewed were from TTT Loyola. Guess we shouldn't hold these documentary makers to that high of a standard.

Socratic method is an excellent way to make you read. But you're in law school you must read whether you're going to be picked or not. When i was chosen i did faily well. I do read everything a few times just incase i missed anything the first time, the second time... Lucky for me after the professor saw i knew the correct answers after about 10 minutes of torture he moved on to the next. Made me nervous but i tried not to show it. I showed confidence.

This is NOT the Socratic Method. What Socrates said about his own method was,that he used questions to cause someone to debunk their own theories,and then would would "birth" their own wisdom as a midwife helps bear children. What these professors are doing is not Socratic, its interrogation.

haha! I was just going to mention something about this. According to wikipedia (who couldn't possibly be wrong) Socrates died in 399BC and Aristotle was born in 384BC. That would mean Socrates was dead 15 years before Aristotle was born. Considering this, It's pretty amazing that Socrates was able to borrow aspects of his method from an unborn Aristotle.

Pretty negative attitude. Realize grading is blind and is based only on the exam, and then just take the Socratic method as an exercise to (1) keep you paying attention in class; and (2) see how quick you are on your feet. If you struggle routinely, don't go into litigation. Cheers.

Yeah, I find the last part of the video stragnge. I thought Aristotle got his inspiration from Socrates, being a discipline of Plato, who was in turn a student of Socrates... How could they mess this up? Apparently, they didn't prepare for class... and if law school students came up with this video... the socratic method didn't work quite as well.

I should have explained myself fully. What I meant by 'falls for' is the negative effect of the socratic method. When you hear of students 'throwing up' and 'crying' after lectures, there has to be something wrong in that, surely. When other students join in the 'entertainment' its just plain pathetic. It slows the pace of the lecture. I'd much rather the lecturer tell the student the work should have been covered and to sitdown. I don't want the drama and the supposed 'humour' the goes with it.

Physics, Math, Philosophy, and Economics have the best average LSAT scores. I understand that English and History majors do well in law school because of their background in reading and writing. I would actually avoid the stereotypical Political Science, Criminal Justice, and "Pre-Law" majors as they typically don't do as well and you want to separate yourself from other applicants. Also, you want a background that will provide a good job in case you change your mind or don't get in.

This video is a perfect example of "passive aggressive silent gunners." (1) They don't want you to understand; (2) they don't want the professor to clarify for someone else; (3) they want you to fail your finals, and (4) they resent those they perceive as "smarter" than them. There personality traits that make up a "gunner" are good ones for the legal profession. Initiative, confidence etc. Those traits alone don't make good lawyers but all things being equal they lead to higher salaries. The quiet types often score better on exams but earn less after graduation. There's simply no getting around the fact that confidence and initiative are, and always have been, highly favorable traits in this profession.

Gunners are annoying and nobody likes them, not even the teachers whose ass they are trying to kiss. Teachers want more than one person to contribute to the discussion. By alienating your classmates with whom you will be working in the future, I don't really think you are helping yourself career-wise. This is very youthful advice. I suspect the people that constantly complain about "gunners" are the same ones that can't figure out why they can't get a job after law school. Kissing ass is a part of building relationships, and relationships are a critical component of career-building. To suggest that a room full of people should sit there like silent lemmings is a dis-service to law students, and undermines the role of the professor in maintaining order in the classroom.

Half the time, I'm just answering profs questions to fill the awkward silence since other cowards are too scared to speak up. word of advice, I'm an undergrad as well and I had the opportunity to talk to a couple of traders at bar cap recently. Their recommendation is to NOT do the CFA. It suggests desperation. If they wanted it, they would train you to do it. Bulge Bracket Banks don't want a CFA. That's the advice I've been given for entering IB in trading or CF anyway. Just my 2 cents.

hanks for the advice....u know some schools reuire a gre for ms in finance, and some require gmat. its a lot of hard work to give both. also wat is the diff between mba finance and ms in finance. i already have a bachelor in finance, so i am guessing ms is better. Depends where you live,if you're broke and know already that you're going to suffer from debts,why joining ? Also,if you were actually good at the job you wouldn't be bitching about how everything is garbage.But i understand you don't like it...go for it then. Also,business school isn't "easier",which means,if you don't work as hard as in Law School,you won't find any paying jobs and you'll end up with a poor 60k/year salary. Figuring a way to get out of it. When you committ 50K for the first year, you basically are past the point of no return. I'm actually almost certain I won't practice law and I'll probably work as a financial analyst instead. My recommendation is that anybody with any business sense should not go to law school. It is filled with political science majors and idiots that don't really know anything worth crap. Business school isn't perfect, but it is 10 times better than law school.

All this t-14 law school crap is garbage. All law schools suck. Finance is 1000 times better. I'm damn near ready to drop out of law school it is so stupid. My suggestion is to actually work for 2-4 years and spend that time obsessing over the GMAT, taking classes until you finally get a score that will get you into an IVY league MBA. An MS in finance will teach you finance better than an MBA, but good jobs are sort of political and almost require an IVY MBA. LAW IS SHIT, CFA is awesome!!

I couldn't tell you about business school, but a volunteer job will look more impessive than almost any regular job for law school. And most law schools offer joint JD/MBA programs. Why not go for both?

Yes, get the Powerscore Bibles. There is one for Logical Reasoning and one for Logic Games. Apparently, they may even be coming out with one for Reading Comprehension, but I'm unsure as to whether or not it's out yet. Also, take a course if you could afford it. If not, however, it's not necessary. Ultimately, preparing for the LSAT requires dilligence. The average score is a 151. It's really not a bad score, considering the difficulty of the test.

Drmeece3 wrong again. The house did pass a HCR bill but the Senate passed their own completely different bill. The are now two bills a house and a senate bill. Neither bill has been considered (brought the the floor debated or voted on). What Pelosi is prosposing to do is use the deem and pass rule to vote on a rule that changes the lang. of the original house bill to match the lang. of the senate bill. The senate bill will never be debated or voted on.

The final conference report must be approved by both chambers before it is sent to the President to sign into law. Good advice in general, but I think the most critical skill on exams is how to write them; and that has a lot to do with natural writing ability. Students who are able to make the most powerful argument in the least wordy way generally do better. Most students spot the issues.

I am a practicing psychologist and I have 3 businesses. So, I dont think that entering law school and being a lawyer is motivated by money. Where I come from... people just go to jail because they dont have the money to pay good lawyers. People suffer mental trauma because they feel neglected and could not even see the shadow of justice. I dont mean to sound like a good guy or anything but these people need help. And if I can..... why not?

No, it isn't too late. Many go to law school who are not just out of college. But think carefully about why you want to do it. Think about your conscious reasons and perhaps other factors that may motivate you. Are there any "shadows" at work? Law school is very expensive and jobs are scarce now (1/'10) though that could change. Talk to any lawyers you know about it and any law students if you can. John

I believe that college grades, especially from strong colleges, coupled with strong LSAT performance drive acceptances. Law schools talk about other things but I think it comes down mostly to such grades and LSAT performance. I must add, however, that although I'm not ignorant of the admission process, I never served on an Admissions Committee and am therefore not expert about it. John Delaney

No one going to law school has been to law school. Most students have similar fears. When I started decades ago, I was scared too. The challenge is not to hide out but to respond positively to get on the right path, as detailed initially in this video, so that your time and energy are well spent in coping with the different law school classroom and the very different law school exams. If you do so, you are dealing with your fear in a way that helps you. I hope my videos help.

I will be beginning my legal career this coming fall as a first year law school student. To be quite honest, I am intimidated about what lies ahead. I have read both of Professor Delaney's books, which came highly recommended from a friend and now feel more confident that the exams are now somewhat demystified by his willingness to share his extensive knowledge of the dreaded exam process.
